Kamari (Santorini)

 

Kamari is the biggest beach resort on Santorini. It caters for package holiday makers with all its conveniences and disadvantages. From that prospective it is pretty much typical for South Europe.

Like Perissa Kamari is well known for the beach with its black volcanic sand. It is something special. The place is pretty developed; even more than Perissa. The good news is that there are pretty much no cars along the water front. Instead it is packed with cafes and restaurants. Most of the tourists you'll see there are Germans and English.

 

If you are interested in night life Kamari is the place to be; second only to Fira. You won't get bored so much I can tell. Other than that the place is ideal for sun-worshippers. You'll see mostly couples and families. Prices are above average but that's more or less typical for Santorini.


 


Busses to the capital Fira are frequent and go at least every hour. In 2007 a ticket cost 1.20 Euro. When a bigger ferry is due to arrive there are busses to the port as well. From Kamari it is only a short drive to the airport which is quiet convenient. During high season there is a little boat to Perissa. The two places are only separated by a hill (400 metres high) called Mesa Vouna.
