Accommodations

The prices for accommodation in Greece are generally considerably lower than in northern European countries. It is not too difficult to find a room quickly on most of the Greek islands. Only in the high season (July to September) can it sometimes be difficult to find something inexpensive locally.

Hotels / rooms on the Greek islands

Still no hotel for your holiday in Greece?

There are many thousands of hotels on the islands of Greece. In our opinion, the best overview is available on Booking.com. Here you can sort the accommodations by price or only display accommodations on a specific island. Hotels can be booked quickly and easily on Booking.com, and there are also many holiday apartments.

There are a lot of hotels, guest houses, etc. in Greece. Almost all of them have a bathroom these days. Prices depend on three factors: the facilities in the room/hotel, the time of year, and your negotiating skills. Bargaining is almost always possible. Rooms are of course most expensive in high season. Greece has a very good system in place to prevent gouging: all rooms are checked by an authority and divided into categories. There are categories from A to E. A are the best and most expensive rooms, E the simplest and cheapest. This authority also sets a maximum price for each room and creates a document for each room with the category and price. This document must be displayed in every room that is rented to tourists. This way, guests always know what the room is really worth. This maximum price is usually only charged in the absolute peak season (mid-July to the end of August). Outside of this time, rooms are much cheaper. Tip: always ask if you can look at the room. Then take a quick look at the document on the wall.

Single rooms are rare. Most of the time you have to take a double room and negotiate a price reduction. The cost of a double room starts at around €12 per night (although in most places it is around €15) for rooms in category D or E. For €20 you should be able to get a simple room in almost any place if you look around or negotiate. In winter prices of around €10 are possible.

There are also a large number of holiday homes and holiday apartments in Greece. Anyone who wants to book a holiday apartment in Greece will usually be pleasantly surprised by the prices. The rental price and also the additional costs (such as final cleaning) are usually lower than in Spain or Italy. Here too, the absolute high season is about twice as expensive as the low season (e.g. May/June or mid-September to the end of October)

Warning: In the high season, rooms in absolute tourist centers such as Corfu or Santorini are often very expensive. In the low season, such as May, it is easy to find a room for 20 euros on Santorini, for example.

Tips for good and inexpensive hotels

– All rather simple rooms for backpackers, usually with private bathroom
– If you click on the name of the hotel, you will find detailed information and the option to book
Location hotel name
Santorini Pension Anna
Paros Alexandra’s
Rhodes Hotel City Centre
Kos Hotel Koala
Crete Heraklion Rea Hotel
Crete Chania Hotel Alexis
Crete Rethymno Pepi Studios

Youth hostels

There are youth hostels in Crete (Heraklion, Rethimnon and Plakias), Santorini (Perissa, Thira, Oi), Paros, Rhodes, Ios and on Corfu. They cost from around 8 – 11 euros per night in Rethimnon, Perissa and Plakias. The others cost a few euros more. A membership card or similar is not necessary (not even in the only official youth hostel in Athens). The better youth hostels are in Crete, especially in Rethimnon and Plakias. I would personally particularly recommend the hostel in Plakias. On Santorini, the hostel in Perissa is the best and in the low season it is currently the cheapest hostel in Greece that I know of.

Camping / Campsites

Wild camping is actually forbidden, but is often tolerated on smaller islands. If you give it a try, you’ll usually have more luck outside of towns. There are campsites on almost all islands with tourism. Facilities and prices are usually mediocre. But there are also places where wild campers are still welcome, e.g. Lendas / Crete or Sougia on Crete.

Long-term rental

Long-term rental of an apartment or flat is cheaper than in Germany. You can get a room (almost always with a bathroom and cooking facilities) for around 250 euros a month including additional costs. There are almost never written rental contracts. You pay for a month. There is usually no deposit or notice period. You can find the cheapest apartments by asking on site. The price depends very much on supply and demand. In a mountain village that is not developed for tourism, you can often get a room with a bathroom and kitchen for 120-150 euros a month, in larger cities or tourist hotspots you pay at least 250. In winter, prices are 20-50% lower. Simple apartments often have no telephone connection, and on cold days in winter you heat with electricity, which can cost an extra 3-5 euros per day and room. Water and electricity cost a little less than in Germany. Renting single-family homes is also possible from 400 euros. Apartments and houses are usually furnished, and crockery, etc. are usually provided.
