Ialyssos Rhodes
Ialyssos on Rhodes is a popular holiday resort that offers a mixture of historical charm and modern infrastructure. The long beaches and crystal clear water make Ialyssos a good destination for water sports enthusiasts and those seeking relaxation.
The municipality of Ialyssos (often also called Trianta) is located just a few kilometers outside of Rhodes Town on the windy northwest coast of the island. After Faliraki in the east of Rhodes, Ialyssos is the largest tourist area in the Dodecanese. While Faliraki is more suitable for a party holiday or beach tourism, Ialyssos is home to water sports enthusiasts, among other things. The number of residents of Ialyssos has grown from 1,000 to over 10,000 due to the tourist boom. This means that the municipality has been the second largest city on Rhodes for several years.
The first half of Ialyssos (coming from Rhodes Town) consists essentially of a main road, a narrow beach and large hotels. Even Hilton and other large international chains have built hotels here. Further towards the airport, the road runs more inland – so the beach is a little quieter. Here you will find smaller guesthouses, family taverns and fast food restaurants for less demanding tourists. An overview of hotels in the town can be found on Booking.com. A good place to stay is the Vivian Studios in Ialyssos .

Kremasti Rhodes
Kremasti on Rhodes is a quiet place known for its relaxed atmosphere and the beautiful Church of St. Mary. The wide beach with pebbles and clear water attracts windsurfers and kitesurfers in particular. Thanks to its proximity to the airport, Kremasti is an interesting holiday resort and a good starting point for exploring the island.
Ialyssos merges almost seamlessly into the municipality of Kremasti. Here, too, the tourist boom has broken out. The nearby airport (only 3 km away) in particular makes this possible. In contrast to Ialyssos, Kremasti has an old town center with a church, community square and library. Like Ialyssos, however, Kremasti was built quickly and carelessly in recent decades in order to make quick money from tourism. The price level is somewhat lower than in Ialyssos. Many tourists are bothered by the noise from the nearby airport. The planes can also be heard in Ialyssos.
No hotel yet? There are many thousands of hotels on the islands of Greece. In our opinion, the best overview is available on Booking.com. Here you can sort the accommodations by price or only display accommodations on a specific island. Hotels can be booked quickly and easily on Booking.com, and there are also many holiday apartments. |
Beach and sport in Ialyssos and Kremasti
There are certainly more beautiful beaches in Greece. The beaches in both towns are several kilometers long, but almost everywhere they are pebbly (also with larger stones). In addition, the beach is quite narrow in many places. At one end (towards Rhodes town) the noise from the main road that runs just a few meters behind the sea is annoying – at the other end the noise from airplanes is annoying. It is dangerous for children in many places because the water quickly gets deep. In the northwest of Rhodes there is usually a strong wind.
The windy conditions are of course ideal for advanced surfers. There are surf schools and surfboard rental companies everywhere in Ialyssos. Kite surfers and other wind-dependent water sports enthusiasts also love the conditions in Ialyssos. For surfing beginners, however, the winds in Ialyssos and Kremasti are rather too difficult; they are better off on the east coast of Rhodes (e.g. in Faliraki).
Buses Ialyssos and Kremasti
In the season, several buses per hour run between Rhodes Town, Ialyssos, Kremasti and on to the airport. When we visited a few years ago, the one-way trip to Rhodes Town cost around 2 euros. Even in winter, there is around one bus per hour to Rhodes Town.
Advantages and disadvantages of a holiday in Ialyssos
For water sports enthusiasts such as surfers, a holiday in Ialyssos makes sense. For other holidaymakers, there are certainly nicer holiday destinations in Greece. However, trips to Ialyssos are often inexpensive and the transfer from the airport is not too far. The good bus connections in the nearby capital of Rhodes are also an argument for a holiday in the resort.
