Located on the north coast of Crete, Heraklion (or Iraklio) is the island’s largest city and its cultural, economic and historical centre. With a rich heritage dating back to the Minoan civilisation, Heraklion offers a fascinating mix of ancient ruins, Venetian architecture, bustling markets and modern urban energy.
Ancient Heritage: The Palace of Knossos
No visit to Heraklion is complete without visiting the legendary Palace of Knossos, located just a few kilometers outside the city. This sprawling archaeological site is one of the most important remnants of the Minoan civilization, considered the oldest in Europe. Stroll through the ruins and imagine life in the labyrinthine palace believed to have been the inspiration for the myth of the Minotaur.
Heraklion Archaeological Museum
A treasure trove of Minoan artefacts, the Heraklion Archaeological Museum houses an unrivalled collection of frescoes, pottery and sculptures, particularly from Knossos. Highlights include the famous Phaistos Disc and the vibrant fresco of the Prince of Lily, bringing Crete’s ancient past to life.

The Venetian heritage
Heraklion’s Venetian heritage can be felt everywhere in the city. The Koules fortress, which stands guard over the harbor, is a majestic reminder of Venetian rule. Visitors can climb the fortress walls to enjoy panoramic views of the busy harbor and the Aegean Sea.
Where to stay in Heraklion: You can book practically all hotels online on Booking.com. The small Rea Hotel is central and usually very cheap. If you want a large hotel in the city center, the El Greco Hotel is a good choice. The prices of accommodation in Iraklio (another spelling of the city) are very seasonal. The high season on Crete is July to September.

Walk along the Venetian city walls that once protected Heraklion from invaders and visit the Loggia, a beautifully restored 17th-century Venetian building that now serves as the town hall.
The lively city centre
Heraklion city centre is a lively mix of tradition and modernity. The centrepiece is Lions Square with the Morosini Fountain, a popular meeting place surrounded by cafes and shops. Nearby, the pedestrianised 25th of August Street runs through a lively promenade lined with restaurants, boutiques and historic landmarks such as Agios Titos Church.
Culinary delights
Heraklion is a foodie paradise, offering a wide range of traditional Cretan dishes and modern cuisine. Try local specialities such as kalitsounia (cheesecake), dakos and freshly caught seafood in a traditional tavern. A truly authentic experience is a visit to a Rakokazano, where locals produce and offer Raki, the typical Cretan spirit.
Beaches and more
Heraklion is not only a vibrant city center, but also the gateway to some of Crete’s most beautiful beaches. Just a short drive away, visitors can relax on Ammoudara Beach or venture further to the crystal-clear waters of Matala, known for its prehistoric caves and relaxed atmosphere.
Modern Attractions and Day Trips
Heraklion’s modern side is evident in attractions such as the Natural History Museum of Crete, which offers interactive exhibits on the island’s geology and biodiversity, and the Cretaquarium, one of Europe’s largest aquariums (outside the city).
The city is also a great base for day trips. In addition to Knossos, the ancient site of Phaistos and the picturesque wine villages of the Peza region offer enriching excursions into the Cretan countryside.
A city of contrasts
Whether you are drawn to its ancient ruins, Venetian charm or vibrant modern culture, Heraklion is a city of contrasts that captivates every visitor. Its unique blend of history, vibrant city life and access to Crete’s natural beauty makes it an essential destination for exploring the island’s past and present.
Our impression of Heraklion: Chania and Rethymno are considered to be the most beautiful cities in Crete. Heraklion has caught up, however, and has improved a lot in recent decades. This includes the large pedestrian zone in the center. Heraklion is the only real big city on Crete. However, there are many less beautiful, newer neighborhoods in Heraklion with a lot of concrete, as in the picture.
