Akrotiri is the only town on the southwestern peninsula of Santorini. The town is best known for the nearby Minoan archaeological site. This is known as Minoan Thira or often simply Akrotri. In summer, however, most tourists come to the area around Akrotiri for a different reason: they come to the Akrotiri peninsula for the Red Beach (Kokkini Ammos), one of the most extraordinary beaches in Greece. In the evening, many come to the lighthouse in the far southwest of Santorini to admire the sunset over the sea.

Red Beach (Kokini Ammos)
A completely unusual beach a few kilometers south of Akrotiri. Both the sand on the beach and the rocks behind it are red. Red Beach is no longer an insider tip. In summer, Kokini Ammos is now completely overcrowded. There is a parking lot near Red Beach (about a 10-minute walk). Drinks are usually sold on the beach (it’s better to bring your own). There are tavernas and jewelry sellers at the parking lot. See longer article below.

Akrotiri (Excavation)
The excavations of Akrotiri are perhaps the most important Minoan ancient sites outside of Crete (like Knossos and Phaistos). It is most commonly referred to as Minoan Thira (Ancient Thira). Unfortunately, Minoan Thira has been closed to tourists for a number of years for a “technical reason”. You can only get to the gate with the following sign.
This was a few years ago, now Akrotiri is open again!
Akrotiri offers fascinating insights into the Bronze Age civilisation of the Cyclades. Often referred to as the “Pompeii of the Aegean”, the city was buried under a thick layer of ash by a volcanic eruption in the 17th century BC and is therefore excellently preserved.

History and Significance
Akrotiri was a thriving Minoan settlement with a highly developed urban life. The ruins display impressive architecture with multi-storey buildings, cobbled streets and a sophisticated drainage system. Particularly noteworthy are the colourful frescoes depicting scenes from everyday life, nature and mythology.
Discovery and Excavations
The archaeological excavation of Akrotiri began in the 1960s under the direction of Greek archaeologist Spyridon Marinatos. Since then, numerous buildings, works of art and everyday objects have been discovered, giving a vivid picture of life in ancient times.
Visiting the site
The excavation site is open to visitors and offers the opportunity to view the impressive ruins up close. A modern protective structure allows the site to be explored all year round. It is recommended to use a guided tour or audio guide to better understand the history and significance of the finds.
Tips for your visit
Combine a visit to Akrotiri with a trip to the nearby Red Beach.
The best time to visit is in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the crowds.
Akrotiri is an absolute must for history and culture buffs and offers a unique opportunity to delve into the past.

Akrotiri (town)
Nice little town with a pretty center. A few taverns and rooms to rent. Akrotiri is the only town in the southwest of Santorini. But there are individual houses scattered everywhere. The construction boom on Santorini has now reached this more remote corner of the island.
No hotel on Santorini yet? There are several hundred hotels on Santorini. In our opinion, the best overview is available on Booking.com. Here you can sort the accommodations by price or only display accommodations in a specific part of the island. Hotels can be booked quickly and easily on Booking.com, and there are also many great holiday apartments. |
Cape Akrotiri
It is about 5 kilometers from Akrotiri on a road that has been well developed for several years to the westernmost point of the island. There is a lighthouse here (see picture). The lighthouse is just over 100 years old and is often called “Faros.”
Every day a large number of tourists come to Cape Akrotiri with expensive photo equipment. Here you have a beautiful view of the sea with the surrounding islands and of Santorini itself. Some come during the day, and many more come for the legendary sunset at Cape Akrotiri.

Red Beach Santorini
The Red Beach on Santorini is one of the most famous and impressive beaches on the island. With its bright red cliffs and dark volcanic sand, it offers a backdrop that is unique in the world.
Location and arrival
The Red Beach is located near the village of Akrotiri in the south of the island. From the car park, a short but rocky footpath leads to this fascinating beach. Alternatively, the beach can also be reached by boat, which offers a spectacular view of the red cliffs.
Special features of the beach
The most striking feature of the Red Beach are the steep cliffs made of red volcanic rock, which form a strong contrast to the turquoise blue water. The beach itself consists of a mixture of dark sand and small pebbles.
Activities
Swimming and snorkeling: The clear water invites you to swim, and snorkeling lovers can explore a diverse underwater world.
Photography: The Red Beach is a paradise for photographers. The colors of the landscape, especially at sunrise or sunset, are spectacular.
Relaxation: Although the beach is not very big, you can enjoy the special atmosphere and marvel at the volcanic landscape.
Tips for visitors
Safety: Due to erosion and falling rocks, caution is advised. Stick to the signposted safe areas.
Equipment: Bring sunscreen, water and a beach mat as there are hardly any shady spots.
Combination with Akrotiri: A visit to Red Beach can be ideally combined with the nearby archaeological site of Akrotiri.
Red Beach is an absolute highlight on Santorini and a must for anyone who appreciates unique landscapes and natural beauty.
