Amoopi (also often written Amoöpi) is a small holiday resort on Karpathos. It is not a traditional village. The town only came into being a few years ago when tourism began on Karpathos. In winter, hardly anyone lives in the bay around Amoopi. Amoopi has no real centre; hotels, taverns, cafes and shops have been and are being built all over the bay. It is now one of the largest holiday resorts on Karpathos, but compared to many other holiday resorts in Greece, it is still quiet and tranquil.
There are several small beaches in Amoopi. The town is located between the capital Pigadia and the airport in the south (each about 10-15 km away by road). Amoopi Karpathos has the best bus connections on Karpathos: See Karpathos bus timetable. A steep road, several kilometers long, leads from the Pigadia – airport connecting road down to Amoopi.
The many small hotels in Amoopi Karpathos are almost all family-owned. The Hotel Votsalakia, for example, has received very good reviews and can also be booked as a package. In Amoopi there is always some wind even in summer, which makes the extreme heat in July and August a little more bearable. Amoopi is known for its good visibility and also for its very clear water. Snorkeling and diving are very popular among holidaymakers in and around Amoopi.
The town of Afiartis Karpathos
Afiartis, in the south of Karpathos, a few kilometers from the airport, is considered one of the best surfing areas in Europe. After it was discovered by wind surfers in the 1980s, the first guesthouses quickly appeared in the barren and windy bay. Taverns, shops and other hotels quickly followed. In Afiartis there is almost always a strong wind (Meltemi), often with 5-8 Beaufort. Afiartis has cult status among kite surfers. International kite surfing competitions are held here every year. Many hotels in Afiartis can also be booked as a package.
