Smaller towns on Amorgos and the monastery of Chozoviotissa

Posted by

The pages cover the places and sights outside the three main towns of Katapola, Aegiali and Chora on Amorgos as well as the Chozoviotissa Monastery.

Chozoviotissa Monastery

The Chozoviotissa Monastery in the east of the island Amorgos island is definitely worth a visit. The location of the Chozoviotissa Monastery on a steep slope (see picture) is particularly worth seeing. The monastery is open daily and there is no admission charge. A donation is expected, long trousers or a skirt and covered shoulders are mandatory.

You can get to the monastery of Katapola or Chora by bus. However, there are hardly any buses outside of the season. From Chora you can also walk to the monastery of Chozoviotissa in less than an hour.

The monastery was founded in 1088 and is spectacularly built into a steep rock face, about 300 meters above sea level. It offers breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea and almost seems like a part of the rocky landscape. The snow-white building stands out impressively against the gray rock.

Our articles about Amorgos

Amorgos Overview
Katapola Amorgos Aegiali Amorgos
Chora Amorgos Chozoviotissa Monastery

Access is via a narrow path and steep stairs, which makes the monastery even more impressive. The monastery was built in honor of the Mother of God Chozoviotissa, whose icon, according to tradition, miraculously arrived at this place. The icon originally comes from Palestine and is said to have been brought by a woman named “Chozoviotissa” who fled the iconoclasm persecution.

Agia Anna Beach

Only about 1 km from the monastery is the famous Agia Anna Beach. The small pebble beach is actually nothing special. However, many tourists come here for a specific reason: important scenes of the famous film “The Big Blue” were filmed on Saint Anna Beach. Above the beach there is a large car park with a snack bar. The beach is quite small and often quite crowded in summer. There are also bus connections to Agia Anna in season. From the Chozoviotissa Monastery you walk down the road to the beach in 20 minutes.

Other villages on Amorgos

If you want to visit the remote villages in the south of Amorgos, you need your own vehicle. The best place to rent mopeds and cars is in Katapola or Aegiali. There are five villages (Stavros, Vroutsi, Rachula, Arkesini and Kolofana. In the very south at the end of the road (the last few kilometers are no longer paved) you come to the good Paradise beach. The area in the south of Amorgos is also ideal for hiking.

Also in the north of the island of Amorgos, a few kilometers by road from Aegiali, there are two nice mountain villages – Tholaria and Strumpos. Up here (often very windy) there are also some overnight accommodation options, which are often used by hikers.

Don’t have a hotel on Amorgos yet?

There are many thousands of hotels on the islands of Greece. In our opinion, the best overview is on Booking.com. Here you can sort the accommodations by price or only display accommodations on a specific island. Hotels can be booked quickly and easily on Booking.com, and there are also many holiday apartments.
