Saronic Islands

Posted by

The Saronic Islands lie directly off the coast of Athens. They are particularly popular with Greek tourists. There are far fewer foreign tourists. The Saronic island group includes Aegina, Spetses, Poros, Hydra and Angistri. All of the islands can be reached directly and easily by ferry from Piraeus (the port of Athens). All of the islands offer overnight accommodation (private rooms/hotels). The majority of tourists are weekend trippers.

Aegina is the largest island in the Saronic Islands group. Aegina is green. Many Athenians call it the pistachio island. Most tourists are day trippers from Athens. So a trip to Aegina on a weekday is more worthwhile. The beautiful main town is known among Athenians for its good tavernas. The Aphaia Temple and the ruined city of Palioochora are worth seeing. More information about Aegina here and here.

Poros is of volcanic origin. The Saronic island is only about 500 meters from the mainland. There are beautiful sandy beaches and forests. The remains of the ancient Temple of Poseidon are worth seeing. Poros can often be reached from Piraeus by Flying Dolphin (fast ferry, about two hours). Our articule about Poros

Spetses is known for its dense pine forests, where many Athenians escape the heat of the city in summer. The villages of Spetses are very charming. You have the feeling of being far away from any big city, even though Athens is barely an hour away by ferry.

Hydra has fewer sandy beaches than the other Saronic Islands, but still has a lot to offer. There are almost no cars or roads on the island. Hydra Town has attracted many artists with its classic Greek island architecture. The monasteries in the interior of the island are worth seeing and can only be reached on foot or by mule, which locals offer to tourists quite cheaply. Fruit stands are teeming with hornets, but they are absolutely peaceful. You also come across a lot of cats. There are some very nice hotels where you can usually stay without booking in advance. Angistri is the smallest of the Saronic Islands with only about 500 inhabitants. Many of the inhabitants are Albanians. The east of Angistri (also Agistri without n) is an insider tip for people who are looking for absolute peace and quiet not far from Athens. The island has fewer tourists than the other Saronic Islands. Our articule about Agistri
