Skopelos is located about 30 kilometers from the Greek mainland (from the Pelion peninsula). The island is about 90 square kilometers in size and will have about 5,000 inhabitants in 2024. It belongs to the Sporades archipelago.
The island of Skopelos has significantly less tourism than the neighboring Skiathos island. This is not necessarily fair – the island is scenically attractive. Since the island has no airport, tourists tend to be individual tourists rather than package tourists. The nearest airport is on the neighboring island of Skiathos (international airport, direct flights from Munich in summer). Many tourists on the island of Skopelos, especially at weekends, are Greeks from Athens.

The island is predominantly wooded (pine forests). The picturesque capital (Skopelos town, see picture) is worth seeing with its over 100 churches and chapels.
In the second port town, Loutraki, you should visit the Acropolis of Selinoutra (ruins). The town of Glossa is quieter than the main town.
Ferries to the island of Skopelos
The island of Skopelos can be reached quite frequently by ferry from Volos, Agios Konstantinos and other Sporades islands. Most of the ferries are fast ferries. In the season, there are about two ferries a day from Skopelos town to Volos, and 1-2 to Agios Konstantinos. In addition, about two ships travel daily to and from the island Alonissos and the island Skiathos. Some of the ferries also stop at another port in Skopelos – in Glossa.

The port and the city are connected by roads to the villages in the west such as Klima and Glossa. There are also developed roads to the south such as Agnontas and Stafilos. |
Buses and taxis on the island of Skopelos
In summer, there are about 3-6 bus connections a day from Skopelos town to many places on the island during the day. There are 3 lines. The buses leave from the port. The beautiful journey across the island to Glossa takes a good hour. In winter, there are significantly fewer buses.
In summer 2024, the following bus timetable applies on the island of Skopelos:
From the port (Skopolos Town) to Stafilos and Agnontas: This short route to the south of the Sporades island is frequently served. Buses run 4 times a day between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. in the two villages.
From the port to Panormos and Kastani: to the west of the island. Here, too, 4 buses run per day.
From the port to Klima, Neo Klima and Glossa in the north: On the by far longest bus route on Skopelos / Greece, only about four buses run per day, even in the season.
In addition, to our knowledge, a private mini-bus runs to some beaches and other tourist destinations such as a monastery in the summer.
There are more than 10 taxis and taxi drivers on the island of Skopelos. If you are planning an important trip, you can also reserve a taxi. Taxis to places near the capital sometimes cost less than 10 euros. The highest taxi prices in the north of the island are between 30 and 50 euros. 3-4 of the taxis are stationed in the north (Glossa), most in or around the main town of Skopelos Town.
