Folegandros is a medium-sized Cycladic island (population 700, area 35 km²). For many visitors, Folegandros was the classic Greek island, still largely untouched by tourism. However, this reputation got around. In recent years, Folegandros has also attracted wealthier holidaymakers looking for a quiet place. The island is relatively difficult to reach – there is no airport on Folegandros, and ferry connections are not very frequent. As the harbor is somewhat unprotected, ferries cannot always dock in bad weather (especially in winter). Then you cannot leave the island for a few days.
There is a post office and an ATM on the island of Folegandros (the emphasis is on the 2nd syllable, i.e. on the “e”), but no bank. However, it is possible to exchange money. It is better not to rely on the ATM as it does not always work. So it is better to bring cash with you to Folegandros. In the meantime (2024) there are at least several ATMs in Chora.
Bicycles, motorbikes and car rentals are available. The supermarkets on Folegandros have a sufficient range.
There are several places on the island of Folegandros. The main town is Chora. The second largest village is Pano Meria in the north. The small port town of Karavostassi consists of only a few houses.
Chora of Folegandros
The largest town on Folegandros (300 residents) is 3-4 km from the port by road. A place full of Cycladic romance: snow-white little houses, a beautiful castle (Kastro), narrow streets, small squares and churches. Since Chora is located 300 meters up on a slope, you have a magnificent view of the island and the sea. A walk to the Panagia church above Chora is worthwhile because the panorama is even better for the eyes and camera. Staying overnight here can be expensive in summer. There are even luxury hotels in Chora with rooms up to 200 euros per night. There is also a small nightlife with music bars. Some of the taverns are still relatively inexpensive – you can get good Cycladic dishes. Recommended in the center of Folegandros-Chora is the grill tavern O Kritikos and the Chic, which is run by a friendly German.
Karavostassi (harbor)
All travelers enter Folegandros via this small harbor town (also Karavostasis). In the small town with around 50 inhabitants there are a few taverns and rooms to rent. There is only one pebble beach in the town. The better beach, Livadi, is a good kilometer away. The only campsite there is “Livadi Camping”. The facilities are quite basic, especially the sanitary facilities. The rooms here are cheaper than up in the Chora, especially in summer – no wonder there is not much going on here in the evenings.
Pano Meria
The small village (around 200 inhabitants) is in the north of Folegandros. There is a small local museum here. The walk of a few kilometers further north to Agios Georgios (the most beautiful beach in Folegandros) is worth it.
Ferries Folegandros
Since there is no airport on Folegandros, the only way to get there is by boat. Around 4-5 ferries per week to Athens and the main Cyclades (Santorini Island, Ios Island, Paros Island, Naxos Island). A few other less frequent ferry connections to the surrounding islands (Syros Island, Milos Island, Sifnos Island, Serifos Island). Ferry tickets are available in Chora in a small travel agency and at the port of Folegandros.
