Lindos Rhodes impresses with its picturesque old town, white houses and, above all, the impressive Acropolis that towers over the town. The mix of culture, history and beautiful beaches makes Lindos one of the highlights of the island.

Lindos is a small village in the east of the Dodecanese island of Rhodes. For many connoisseurs, it is the most beautiful village on Rhodes. At least, it is probably the most visited village on Rhodes and perhaps the most visited village in all of Greece. On summer days, thousands of tourists come to the town every day – Lindos is a must for almost all Rhodes holidaymakers.

Lindos has two sights. Firstly, it is the traditional listed town with its narrow streets and romantic white houses. Secondly, directly above Lindos is the Acropolis – probably the most important ancient sight on Rhodes and in the entire Dodecanese.

The town of Lindos Rhodes

The renovation of Lindos in recent decades has been a complete success. In summer, the narrow, car-free streets become crowded pedestrian zones. Tourists quickly get lost in the many narrow alleys. You come across taverns, cafes, small shops with the typical tourist kitsch and much more.

The price level is a little higher than in other places on Rhodes, but not completely excessive. There are also a few places to stay in guest houses and private rooms. Almost all visitors are day trippers from Faliraki Rhodes, Rhodes Town or other tourist places on the island. Below the town there is a good, about 300 meter long beach with tavernas.

The Acropolis of Lindos on Rhodes

The Acropolis of Lindos is certainly the most important ancient building in the Dodecanese and probably one of the 10 most important sights in Greece. The oldest temple on this site was built around 800 BC. You reach the Acropolis via a steep path with steps in about 10 minutes from the village of Lindos (about 120 meters difference in altitude). If you’re too lazy, you can ride up on a donkey for a few euros. The donkey taxis of Lindos are now as famous as the donkey express from Thira on Santorini. After paying an entrance fee of around 10 euros (2024 price), you can take a look at the castle above Lindos from the inside. Tourists are rarely disappointed by what they see.

The highlight is the Temple of Anthina Lindia at the highest point in the Acropolis of Lindos. If you are not interested in the ancient treasures, you can at least enjoy the magnificent view over the east coast of Rhodes.

Getting to Lindos

Buses from Rhodes Town and Faliraki via Archangelos run at least every hour, depending on the season. Even in January, when we visited Lindos, there were about 8 buses a day in both directions. There are also bus connections several times a day from Lindos to the south as far as Gennadi and at least once a day even to Apolakkia. From Rhodes Town, the bus to Lindos costs around 5 to 6 euros, from Faliraki a little less (both one way). From Rhodes Town, the bus, which visits many villages along the way, takes around 90 minutes.

If you rent a car, you park outside. The rush is so gigantic that there are free shuttle buses from the parking lots into town (of course only in summer).

It is highly recommended to visit the town in summer outside of the main tourist times. The Acropolis is open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., and shorter in the evenings in winter when it gets dark early. It makes sense to get up early and arrive in Lindos well before the tourist crowds (from around 10 a.m.). Rhodes Town is around 50 km away.

You should definitely look for a hotel online beforehand and reserve a room. The Booking.com website is ideal for this, with many cheap offers for Rhodes. Lindos is a very beautiful village and worth more than a day trip.
