Species, Distribution & Behaviour Tips

Greece is known for its nature, sunshine and beautiful beaches – but also for some spider species. Most are harmless, but a few can be venomous. For travellers, it’s important to know which species occur, how to recognise them and how to react in case of a bite.

Venomous spiders are rare in Greece and are mostly found in rural, rocky or forested areas. They are particularly active during the summer months when it’s warm and dry. Typical regions – just examples:

  • Peloponnese: olive groves and rocky slopes

  • Cyclades: such as Naxos and Paros

  • Central Greece: forests and hills
