The island of Arki is a small island (area 7 km²) north of Lipsi, which belongs to the group of Dodecanese islands. Only about 50 inhabitants live on Arki (in 2024). Because the island has poor ferry connections, it has so far been largely spared from tourism. In recent years, however, an increasing number of adventurous backpackers and sailors have come to Arki.

Almost all of the residents live in the town of the same name. There are few sights and good beaches. A walk to the chapel above the town is worthwhile, however. If you are planning longer hikes on Arki, you can ask the friendly locals for advice in one of the three taverns. Most residents make a living from fishing. As on all Greek islands, there is now also an electricity supply. There is no supermarket, only a small kiosk sells the bare essentials. 3 taverns offer simple dishes at normal prices. You should order fish, which is usually freshly caught. In some of the houses you can rent one of the 20 or so rooms in Arki for 35 euros or more, but you shouldn’t expect much comfort.
Marati: If Arki is still too big for you, you can cross over to the offshore island of Marati (also called Marathos). There is a tavern there with rooms to rent and slightly better beaches. The island now has fewer than 10 inhabitants. Fishing boats take holidaymakers from Arki to Marati.
There are no buses or long roads on either island.
Ferries to Arki: Despite the fairly large port, only a few ferries call at the island. 1-3 ferries per week depart from Samos, Rhodes, Patmos and Lipsi. In summer there are also smaller excursion boats from the island of Patmos and other islands.
Fishing: Arki is known for its fishing opportunities and you can try your luck or even go out with a local fisherman.
Hiking Arki: The island is ideal for hiking. The hiking trails lead through the rugged landscape and along the coast. You can hike to some of the highest points on the island and enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding sea and nearby islets. Of course, the island is only a few kilometers in size, so very long hikes are hardly possible.
Beaches: Arki has some secluded beaches with clear waters. The most famous is Tiganakia beach with turquoise waters and small islands in the background. About 2 km from the main town. There are also other quiet bays such as Limnari and Kapsalismenos where you can enjoy some solitude.
Birdwatching: The island is a paradise for birdwatchers. You can see species such as the Eleonora’s falcon, which breeds in the area, as well as seagulls, little owls, terns and shags. Arki and the surrounding islets are important habitats for migratory and nesting seabirds due to the island’s isolation.
Reptiles: Arki is home to small reptiles such as lizards and geckos, which are often found sunbathing on rocks or walls. There are two types of geckos on Arki: Aegean bare-fingered geckos (Mediodactylus kotschyi) and European half-fingered geckos (Hemidactylus turcicus turcicus).
Diving and snorkeling is an experience. In the clean water with good visibility you can see a fascinating underwater world.
