Finiki (Karpathos)

Posted by

Finiki is a tiny fishing village in the west of Karpathos. It consists of a large fishing port, a small beach and white houses with blue shutters – picture-perfect Greece. In Karpathos, Finiki is known for its fish taverns – in Finiki they really do serve fresh, home-caught fish.

Most visitors come by rental car and only stay for a few hours.

Eating Finiki: Finiki is known throughout Karpathos and beyond for its fresh fish. There are several tavernas that serve fresh fish. I enjoyed the inexpensive Nikos tavern, a few steps behind the harbor. The restaurants directly in the harbor are only a little more expensive. From here you can watch the fishermen mending their nets. The Psarotaverna Delfini (Dolphin Fish Tavern) is located in the center of the harbor. Here you can get fresh fish from the fishermen at the harbor, just five meters away. As everywhere in Greece, fish is not that cheap here either – you can expect to pay €30-40 per kilo for good fresh fish in the Delfini tavern. You should definitely try the delicious Dakos starter here too – rusks with tomatoes and feta cheese made by the mother-in-law. The tavern Under the Trees, located north of the fishing village of Finiki, is also recommended by many regular guests.

Buses to Finiki Karpathos: Monday, Wednesday and Friday in summer, three buses leave Karpathos (Pigadia). On these days, a day trip to Finiki by bus is possible. There are two bus connections on Saturday, but no buses run on the other days. All buses continue to Lefkos and then immediately return to Pigadia. The airport is about 20 km away.

On foot: The small tourist town of Arkassa is only 2-3 km from Finiki. The walk from Arkasa takes just over half an hour. The interesting hike through the nearby Flaskia Gorge is more difficult.

Ferry Finiki – Kasos: A small ferry runs about four times a week during the season from Finiki to the neighboring island of Kasos. Since the ship (roughly a fishing boat) is not particularly large, tourists often get seasick in the wind and waves.

Accommodation: You can rent fairly cheap, simple rooms in Finiki. If you are looking for peace and relaxation, this is the place for you. A good overview of almost all accommodations can be found on Booking.com. We really liked Theodosis Studios Finiki – great apartments at a reasonable price in the village 50 meters from the sea.

What to see and do in Finiki?

1.The Port
The small port is the heart of the island. Here visitors can admire the colourful fishing boats and watch the fishermen at work. It is also the perfect place for a waterfront dinner. The restaurants offer fresh fish and seafood, often caught the same day.
2.The Finiki Beach
The small sandy beach is sheltered from the wind and is ideal for families with children. The calm, clear waters are perfect for swimming and relaxing.
3.Traditional Tavernas
The tavernas are known for their authentic Greek cuisine. Dishes such as grilled fish, octopus and the traditional Carpathian dish “makarounes” (homemade pasta) are particularly recommended.
4.Starting Point for Excursions
Finiki is a good base for exploring the west coast of Karpathos, including the nearby village of Arkassa with its ancient acropolis and impressive views.

Tips for visiting:

Visit the village in the evening to enjoy a romantic sunset dinner by the port.
The area is quiet and perfect for travelers who want to escape the hustle and bustle.
