Naoussa (Paros)

Posted by

Naoussa on Paros is pure Cycladic atmosphere. For most holidaymakers, Naoussa is the most beautiful place on Paros. The narrow streets, the white houses and the many churches make the place almost like a museum. The small fishing port of Naoussa is considered one of the most charming sights in the Cyclades.

In Naoussa you can rent a room in one of the many snow-white houses in the narrow, car-free streets. During the day you can go to the beautiful beaches in the area, in the evening eat freshly caught fish in one of the taverns in the romantic fishing port and then order a drink in a cozy bar in the old town. Rarely has a holidaymaker regretted choosing Naoussa as a vacation spot.

Beautiful: The joints between the cobblestones of the alleys and squares are painted white by hand, in many places several times a year.

All of this has made Naoussa so popular in recent years that the place is now almost bursting with tourists in high season. Although Naoussa cannot yet keep up with the main town on the island of Parikia in terms of the number of tourists, the small town has developed into the second major tourist center on the island of Paros. The place is also known for its many churches.

The port of Naoussa is one of the most beautiful in the Cyclades. In contrast to the other places, the number of fishermen in Naoussa does not seem to be decreasing. There are still dozens of fishing boats in the port.

The famous fishing port

Unfortunately, prices in the taverns have risen significantly in recent years. This is especially true for the restaurants around the fishing port. A cheap alternative are the souvlaki stalls on the main square.

In Naoussa, a small stream flows into the sea. Many geese and other water birds live in the stream and in the sea. The animals are popular with locals and tourists alike.

Buses and getting to Naoussa

The bus station is a few hundred meters outside the center. Depending on the season, around 5-10 buses a day connect Naoussa with the town Parikia (10 km), the capital of Paros. In season, there are also several buses a day to the east of Paros, to Piso Livadi and Drios. In addition, a few buses a day connect Naoussa with Santa Maria in the east of the island. In the low season, only one bus a day runs on this route. For several years now, you have had to buy tickets at kiosks or machines on Paros. The bus drivers no longer sell tickets. A ticket costs 2 euros.

Naoussa is about 10 km from the island’s capital, Parikia. Another road leads south from Naoussa to Piso Livadi and Drios and further to Alyki (island ring road).

Accommodation in Naoussa

The Young Inn is an unofficial youth hostel run by a German woman. At 8 euros per bed, it is probably the cheapest accommodation on Paros, possibly in the whole Cyclades. Good atmosphere and a good opportunity to meet people. Not every guest is really young. The owner is happy to pick you up from the ferry in Parikia if you call. The Young Inn is quite difficult to find. Otherwise, there are many guest rooms in the old town and a campsite by the sea about 2 km outside the small town.

There are many hotels and guesthouses in Naoussa that are surprisingly inexpensive in the low season. Double rooms for under 40 euros are not uncommon. A good overview can be found on Booking.com.

Beaches Naoussa

The small Peperi beach is very popular in the town. The beautiful sandy Peperi Beach is, however, very crowded in summer due to its proximity to the town and its short length.

Piperi Beach, the city beach

Some beaches a little outside the small town are also recommended. One of them is Monastiri Beach, about four kilometers north of Naoussa behind the town of Kolimphitres. It is one of the most beautiful beaches on Paros and is well attended in the high season. On another great beach, right in Kolimpithres, you will find some good cafes and taverns. Both beaches are ideal for a trip on a hot day. During the week, as on all beaches on Paros, it is a little less busy than on Sundays. In summer, small ferries take bathers from Naousa to the two beaches of Kolimphitres.

There are also beautiful beaches around the village of Santa Maria in the east. In the high season, you can get to the beaches in the area with small ferries or water taxis. There are also hotels and even a campsite in Santa Maria on Paros. In summer, there are several buses a day to Santa Maria from the bus station in Naoussa.

If you have a vehicle, you can also find your dream beach in Ampelas, a few kilometers away. Concerts and other events sometimes take place here in the summer. Ampleas Beach is usually not as crowded as many other beaches on the island.

Perhaps the best beach on Paros, Chrissi Akti (Golden Beach) just before Drios in the southeast of the island, can be reached by rental car from Naoussa in just 20 minutes. The distances on Paros are generally not particularly great.
