Accommodation in Knossos: The excavation is practically in a suburb of Heraklion, the capital of Crete. There are only a few hotels around Knossos. We recommend staying in the city of Heraklion. You can book a hotel via Booking.com, recommended in the center of Heraklio are the small Rea Hotel (inexpensive and OK) or the larger El Greco Hotel.

First settled more than 7,000 years ago, Knossos flourished between 2,000 and 1,400 BC during the height of Minoan civilization. Getting to Knossos: Many come on organized bus tours from the tourist resorts of Crete. There are very large paid parking lots for rental cars. From Heraklion (from the bus station) there are regular buses (city buses) to Knossos, several times an hour in season, and they are inexpensive. It is too far to walk from Heraklion. By bike is possible, but it is quite an uphill walk from Heraklion (also spelled Iraklio).

Arrive early: The Palace of Knossos is one of the most visited attractions in Crete. To avoid the biggest rush, it is advisable to come early in the morning when the palace opens. Then you can explore the complex without the large crowds.
