Chora of Amorgos

Posted by

The Chora of Amorgos is the traditional capital of the island. However, it is no longer the largest town on Amorgos – the two port towns of Katapola and Aegiali have overtaken Chora.

Chora Amorgos with its narrow streets is car-free in the center. It is a place with pure Cycladic romance: snow-white houses, blue shutters and doors, chapels and small churches. There is something interesting around every corner – e.g. a small shop or a kafenio.

As in many mountain villages on the Greek islands, most of the residents are older people. The younger ones have migrated to Athens, abroad or to the coastal towns. However, after the renovation of the Chora of Amorgos, many tourists come here and the place has been quite lively again for a few years. This is especially true in the months of June, July, August and September.

The buses stop at the car park outside Chora Amorgos. Since the town is the road junction of Amorgos, all buses on the island, be it to Katapola port, Aegiali port or the Chozoviotissa monastery in Chora, depart from this location. The buses on Amorgos only run between mid-May and mid-October. Depending on the route, there are only a few connections per day. There are slightly more buses in high season than in low season.
