Lefkes and the interior of Paros

Lefkes (town on the island of Paros)

Lefkes, located in the center of the island of Paros, is considered the most beautiful village on the island. Thousands of day-trippers fill the narrow streets of Lefkes every day in summer.

In the competition for the most beautiful place on the Cycladic island of Paros, Lefkes competes with Naoussa. However, Lefkes is certainly surrounded by more beautiful scenery and has better hiking opportunities. Highlights in Lefkes are the churches, chapels and narrow streets with houses that have been renovated strictly according to the rules of traditional Cycladic architecture. The white houses house small, traditional kafenions, cafes, taverns and shops. Interesting places include the butcher after the central square (Platia) and the inexpensive bakeries.

You should definitely try a tiropita (cheese turnover). There are several taverns in Lefkes (medium prices) that serve delicious wine from the Lefkes area at reasonable prices. Many of the day tourists return to their hotels on the coast by bus, a little tipsy.

The municipality of Lefkes was once large, with 4,000 inhabitants. Most of the residents have left the village, however. Today, some are returning because of tourism. The church of Agias Trias (3 Saints) towers over the village. The cemetery behind the church is also worth a visit. Cemeteries in Greece are very different from those in Germany. The small museum in Lefkes is also interesting.

Buses from the state-run bus company KTEL from Parikia in the west of Paros, as well as from Drios and Piso Livadi in the east, travel to Lefkes Paros up to hourly during the high season. From the bus stop, walk back about 10 metres. Follow the wide paved path. This leads directly to the centre of Lefkes.

Petaloudes (Butterfly Valley, Paros Island near Lefkes)

Hundreds of thousands of butterflies from all over the island of Paros come to the Petaloudes Valley every summer. They are all of the same species: orange butterflies with black and white wings. Hundreds of visitors come to the small valley every day in summer to admire the natural spectacle. The animals hang in the trees in the Valley of the Butterflies during the day and only fly at night. Visiting the Petalloudes Valley costs a few euros to enter, but it is worth the money. The butterflies are only in the valley from June to September at the latest.

Getting there by bus: You can take the bus from the main town of Parikia to Aliki and get off near the valley on the way (about 500 meters walk). You should tell the driver where you want to go, as there is no official stop called “Butterfly Valley”.

Climbing Agios Pantes (Paros)

At 750 meters, Agios Pantes is the highest mountain on Paros. It is an ideal destination for a moderately difficult hike. You should only walk or drive up the mountain when the weather is very clear. Only then will you have a breathtaking view. If the visibility is good, you can see many Cyclades islands. You can take a map with you to identify the islands. There is a road from the town of Lefkes described above to Mount Agios Pantes. Hiking up the mountain is easiest from Lefkes, but beautiful hiking trails also lead from other places on Paros to the highest peak on the island of Paros. When hiking up Mount Agios Pantes, you should definitely take food (drinking water!) with you, there is no water on the way or at the summit.
