Beaches on Milos

Posted by

Milos has great beaches. Unlike most other islands in the Cyclades, many of the beaches on Milos are extremely well protected from waves thanks to the large bay and the nearby neighboring islands. Many of the beaches on the volcanic island feel more like you are on a lake. Most of the beaches on the island are sandy. The water is so shallow on some beaches that you can walk out 100 meters or more.

Flat beaches and no waves – such beaches are ideal, especially with small children. The shallow water also has the advantage that it warms up more quickly when the sun shines. This is particularly advantageous in May, as the water in Greece is still quite cool at this time.

Paliochori

Paliochori Beach on Milos

The best and most beautiful beach on Milos is called Paliochori and is located in the south of the island. It is easy to reach. A road leads from Adamas (about 9km) to Paliochori. There are enough parking spaces. In summer (from June) there are also buses from Adamas to Paliochori, and in high season there are up to seven buses a day in both directions.

Don’t have a hotel on Milos yet?

There are more than a hundred hotels on Milos. In our opinion, the best overview is on Booking.com. Here you can sort the accommodations by price or only display accommodations in a specific part of the island. Hotels can be booked quickly and easily on Booking.com, and there are also many holiday apartments.

There are two special features on Paliochori beach. Firstly, there are hot springs in Paleochori that heat the water considerably in some places. Secondly, the Scirocco tavern (right at the entrance to Paliochori beach) is interesting. There, hot steam from the earth’s interior of the volcanic islands of Milos is used directly for cooking. The whole thing is not quite as spectacular as I saw in a restaurant in Timanfaya in Lanzarote (Canary Islands, Spain). However, to my knowledge, it is the only tavern in Greece that cooks with geothermal energy. There are two other good restaurants and also a few guest houses and rooms to rent in Paliochori.

Provatas

Provatas in the south of Milos

Provatas is considered the second best beach on Milos. It is also on the south coast of the island. Since there are no hot springs here, Provatas is not quite as interesting as Paliochori. There are buses to Provatas in high season – also about 7-8 per day. The advantage of Provatas is that the beach is not quite as crowded as Paliochori. Provatas offers beautiful yellow sand and good tavernas. The road from Adamas to Provatas is paved (distance about 8 km).

Other beaches on Milos

In the southwest of the island there are some dream beaches that cannot be reached by car or on foot. You can only get there by boat. In summer there are some excursion boats to these beaches from the island’s capital, Adamas. There are also nice beaches around Adamas. The long Papikinou beach just outside Adamas has the disadvantage that the main road runs directly behind it. You can reach it on foot from Adamas. There is also a small, wave-protected beach behind the Adamas ferry port. The local beach of Pollonia in the northeast of Milos is also beautiful.
