Rethymno: Venetian elegance meets Cretan culture

Posted by

Located on the north coast of Crete, the town of Rethymno effortlessly combines old world charm with a vibrant, modern atmosphere. Known for its Venetian architecture, narrow cobbled streets and pristine beaches, Rethymno is a destination that enchants visitors with its unique character and rich history.

Opinion: Rethymno (also Rethymnon or Rethimno) on the island of Crete is a fascinating place with a beautiful old town and impressive Venetian architecture that creates a very special atmosphere. The mix of historic buildings and picturesque alleyways invites you to stroll and explore. However, the town can feel very crowded and touristy in high season, which can somewhat diminish its charm. For travelers seeking peace and seclusion, Rethymno may therefore be less suitable.

Where to stay in Rethymno
There are a large number of hotels, but they are often fully booked. There are many deals on Booking.com, and outside of peak season there are also many cheap hotels and holiday apartments. Our absolute favorite are the studios in the Kleoniki Mare Hotel. Very good location almost directly on the beach, pool OK, very inexpensive and not far from the beautiful old town of Rethimno.

Exploring the old town
The heart of Rethymno lies in the charming old town, a labyrinth of streets with pastel-colored buildings, flower-bedecked balconies and inviting cafes. The Venetian influence is unmistakable, with landmarks such as the Rimondi Fountain, a 17th-century masterpiece that forms the centerpiece of the town.

A stroll through the old town reveals hidden courtyards, boutiques selling local handicrafts and a number of charming tavernas. The area is a photographer’s dream, with something new to discover around every corner.

The Venetian Fortezza
Lowering the town is the Fortezza, a well-preserved Venetian fortress that offers sweeping views of the harbor and surrounding coastline. Built in the late 16th century to protect Rethymno from pirate attacks, the Fortezza is a must-see for history buffs and anyone seeking breathtaking views.

Within the walls, visitors can explore ancient structures, including a mosque and the remains of a church, and immerse themselves in the lives of those who once defended the city.

A legacy of cultures
Rethymnon’s unique character is shaped by the history of its various rulers. The Neratze Mosque, originally a Venetian church that was later converted into an Ottoman mosque, is a striking example of this cultural fusion. Today it serves as a music conservatory, adding another facet of charm to the city’s vibrant cultural scene.

A culinary paradise
For foodies, Rethymno’s culinary scene is irresistible. Traditional Cretan dishes such as lamb with stamnagathi, fresh seafood and sweet kalitsounia are served in cozy tavernas. Pair your meal with a glass of local wine or the island’s famous raki for a true taste of Crete.

For those seeking a more in-depth culinary experience, Rethymno offers numerous culinary tours and cooking classes that showcase the island’s rich gastronomy.

The restaurants in the Old Port in the city center are unfortunately a bit overpriced. We recommend visiting one of the small, family-run tavernas in the old town, a little off the main tourist trail. Our favorite is Stella’s Kitchen. Stella also rents out inexpensive, basic rooms.

The Picturesque Venetian Harbour
The Venetian Harbour is one of Rethymno’s landmarks. Lined with colourful fishing boats and waterfront restaurants, it’s the perfect place to enjoy a leisurely meal or a sunset stroll. The focal point of the harbour is the Egyptian Lighthouse, a stunning landmark that has guided sailors into the safe embrace of Rethymnon’s shores for centuries.

Beaches near Rethymno
With its many beautiful beaches, Rethymno is an ideal destination for sun-worshippers. The long sandy beach of Rethymno in Crete stretches for many kilometres along the town’s coastline, providing a convenient option for swimming and relaxing.

For something a little different, head to Preveli Beach, known for its palm-fringed lagoon, or Episkopi Beach, a quieter spot popular with locals.

Modern Attractions and Activities
Rethymno isn’t just known for its history. Visitors can visit the Museum of Contemporary Art, which displays works by modern Greek artists, or immerse themselves in Cretan culture at the Historical and Folklore Museum.

Nature lovers can venture up Mount Psiloritis, located in Rethymno County, or hike through the Imbros Gorge, both of which offer stunning natural landscapes.

Festivals and vibrant culture
Rethymno is a city that knows how to party. The annual Renaissance Festival pays homage to the Venetian past with theater performances, concerts and art exhibitions. The Rethymno Carnival, one of the largest in Greece, fills the streets with colorful parades and festive spirit.

A destination for all seasons
Whether you are attracted by the historical treasures, the culinary delights or the picturesque beaches, Rethymno offers something for every traveler. The seamless blend of Venetian elegance, vibrant culture and natural beauty makes the city a must-see destination in Crete.

Several other seaside resorts in the district (nomos) of Rethymno are also great for a great vacation. These include, for example, Georgioupolis west of Rethymno, Bali east or Plakias or Agia Galini in the south of the district.

Many of Crete’s major attractions can be reached from Rethymno by bus or rental car in 1-2 hours. These include Knossos near Heraklion, the Samaria Gorge and the great city of Chania Chania (Crete): The perfect mix of past and present.
