Plaka, Tripiti and Klima (Milos)

1. Plaka, the old capital of Milos

Plaka is located on a mountain about 6 km from the port of Adamas. It is the official capital of Milos, but has not been the largest town for some time. Due to tourism, the seaside resort and port of Adamas now has more residents. Plaka is a typical Cycladic town with white houses, narrow streets and blue window frames and doors.

Plaka, the old capital of the island of Milos

There are several beautiful churches in Plaka. The most striking and largest is the church on top of the Kastro of Plaka. A footpath leads up from the center of Plaka in about 10 minutes.

From the top you have a great view of the town of Plaka and the sea (see picture below). In Plaka there are some accommodations as well as traditional and modern cafes and taverns. In summer hundreds of tourists walk through the narrow streets every day, and almost everyone gets lost in them.

2. The village of Tripiti and the Venus de Milo

Very close to Plaka is the village of Tripiti. Here you will find the largest and perhaps most beautiful church on Milos. The archaeological sites a few hundred meters outside Tripiti are well known. Next to each other are the famous catacombs, a Roman theater, a Roman bath and the site where the world-famous figure of the Venus de Milo was found, which is marked by a sign.

Visit the catacombs of Milos

The catacombs are one of the most important early Christian sites in Greece and are definitely worth a visit. They consist of several underground burial chambers and corridors that were once used for Christian burials.

The ancient theater

Near Tripiti are the remains of an ancient Roman theater with a wonderful view of the Aegean Sea. Parts of the theater have been restored and it is freely accessible.

Traditional windmills

On the hill of Tripiti you will find beautiful old windmills, some of which have been renovated and converted into holiday accommodation. The view from there is fantastic.

Strolling through the alleys

Tripiti is a quiet village with picturesque streets, white houses and flowers growing on the facades. A stroll is ideal to soak up the relaxed atmosphere.

Venus de Milo

Milos became world famous through a chance archaeological discovery – the Venus de Milo. The most famous ancient Greek work of art from the 1st century BC was discovered by a farmer on Milos near the municipality of Tripiti in 1820 and is now in the Louvre in Paris. The arms of the Aphrodite statue were unfortunately never found. On Milos, there is only a small multilingual sign at the site where the sculpture was found – a replica can of course be found in the Archaeological Museum of Milos in Plaka.

Material: The statue is made of marble.

Size: It is about 2.02 meters high.

Condition of the Venus de Milo: The statue is not complete because it lacks arms. What these might have originally looked like is still the subject of speculation.

Style: The figure shows a harmonious combination of classical and Hellenistic style, with flowing shapes and a graceful expression

3. Klima village on Milos island
