East Naxos

Posted by

The east coast of Naxos is almost uninhabited. There are only a few places with a handful of houses. A paved road has been running along the southern half of East Naxos for many years. Even in high season, secluded bays invite you to swim. The area is a paradise for hikers.

Getting to East Naxos

You can actually only get to East Naxos by rental car. The only road leads from the villages in the center of Naxos down to the coast in seemingly endless serpentines. From Naxos town you drive through the larger villages of Halki and Filoti to Apiranthos. In Apiranthos you turn right towards Moutsouna. After about 10 long, serpentine-filled kilometers you arrive down in Moutsouna.

You turn right before the town and take the road along the sea towards the south. Almost everyone comes here with their own vehicle – usually with a rental car or moped or motorbike. If you’re fit, you can of course also tackle the steep mountain roads by bike.

Beaches and town of East Naxos

There are good swimming opportunities along the coastal road of East Naxos. Perhaps the most beautiful beach is in Psili Ammos, but further south in Kleidos or Panormos it is even more secluded. Some of the houses in these tiny settlements also rent out rooms. There are also a few taverns. However, outside of the main season you should assume that everything is closed to be on the safe side.

The largest cluster of houses is at the beginning of the road in the village of Moutsouna. Above this area there used to be mining (minerals such as emery). However, this stopped a few years ago, probably forever. You can still see a rusty cable car and loading equipment at the port of Moutsouna. Since the mine has closed, tourism is now the only source of income in East Naxos, apart from a few olive trees, sheep and goats. In Moutsouna you have the best chance of finding an open tavern or accommodation even in the low season, and with a bit of luck even in winter.

Another paved road has been leading further north for a few years (turn-off in the beautiful village of Koronos) down to the east coast of Naxos. There are a few houses at the bottom. The hamlet is called Lionas. In Lionas there are also 1-2 taverns and rooms to rent during the season, but no road along the coast.
