Nissiros is a small volcanic island in the Dodecanese. The 40 km² island has around 1,300 inhabitants. Tourists usually come to Nissiros because of the volcano. Many only make a day trip from neighboring Kos. Unfortunately, the island doesn’t have much to offer other than the volcano – especially hardly any sandy beaches. But the crater is worth seeing!
Trip from Kos to Nissiros: The ferries for day tourists from Kos use their own bus, which is included in the tour price. A day trip from Kos costs around 20 euros, with pick-up at the hotel 30 euros. A great, inexpensive day trip! >>> Can be booked on the great website Getyourguide

Mandraki: The port town and capital of Nissiros (also called Mandrakion) is the only large town on the island. Almost everyone who stays overnight on Nissiros stays here. Prices are average. Especially in the evening, when the many day trippers have left, you can eat well and enjoy peace and quiet in the taverns in Nissiros. There are hardly any sights or beaches. However, the main town of Nissiros has a pleasant atmosphere.
Volcano: Approximately in the center of the circular island of Nissiros is the island’s big attraction: the volcanic crater (caldera). A path leads from the bus stop at the volcano into the crater. You can climb down into the crater. Sulphur gas escapes from the many holes in the ground, and it smells of rotten eggs everywhere. Be careful: the water in the holes is boiling hot.
There have been some serious accidents. Be careful and don’t leave the paths! The volcano is the most interesting natural attraction in the Dodecanese. A visit to Nissiros is definitely worth it.
Pali: Small, nice fishing village with about 50 inhabitants by the sea, about 5 km from Mandraki. Some taverns and accommodation options. Ideal for those seeking peace and quiet.
Nikia: Settlement in the mountains near the volcano. Good view of the volcano and the sea of the Dodecanese and some islands. From here the volcano can be reached on foot (about 1 hour). 2 good taverns.
Buses on Nissiros: There is only one bus that runs several times a day from Mandraki, via Pali to the volcano (the only road on Nissiros).
Overnight stays in Nissiros: Most tourists who stay overnight on the island stay in the port town of Mandraki. Almost all accommodation can be booked via Booking.com. We really liked the inexpensive Hotel Porfyris in town (pool and good breakfast included in the price).
Long, very good film about the island of Nissiros and the volcano

Ferries to Nissiros: The large car ferries from Athens on the way to Kos and Rhodes only stop in Nissiros twice a week. However, in summer there are smaller ships from Kos, Rhodes, Kalymnos and Tilos every day, which are mainly used by day tourists.

Sights
If you go on a day trip to the island, you will of course want to see the volcano first and foremost. But there are other, less important, sights on the island of Nissiros, especially for visitors who stay for a few days. Here is a small list of all the attractions on Nisiros:
Volcano (Stefanos Crater): This active volcano is one of the main attractions on the island and has a large crater on whose caldera floor you can walk. The smell of sulfur and steaming fumaroles complete the experience and offer an insight into the volcanic activity of the island.

Nikia Village: Nikia is a picturesque village located on the edge of the volcanic caldera, offering stunning views of the volcano and the sea. Its narrow streets, whitewashed houses and colorful doors make it ideal for a leisurely stroll. The village also has a charming central square, Porta, with a beautiful mosaic floor.
Mandraki: Mandraki, the island’s capital and main port, is a traditional Greek town with whitewashed houses, narrow streets and luminous mansions. The town is also home to the Panagia Spiliani Monastery, built on a hilltop and offering panoramic views.

Emporio Village: Another caldera village, Emporio is known for its stone houses and winding streets. The village’s location high above the crater offers excellent views of the volcano and the surrounding countryside. There is also a small castle, Paleokastro, which offers a glimpse into Nisyros’ medieval history.
Pali Beach: This beach near Pali village has clear waters and is quieter than other beaches on the island. It’s a great place to swim and relax and there are some good tavernas nearby where you can get fresh seafood. Overall, there are few great beaches on the island, this is the best beach.
Paleokastro (ancient fortress): One of the best preserved ancient fortresses in Greece, Paleokastro dates back to the 4th century BC. It features massive walls made of volcanic rock and offers fantastic views of the surrounding area.
Natural Hot Springs (Loutra): Nisyros is known for its hot springs thanks to volcanic activity. The thermal baths in Loutra are famous for their healing properties and attract visitors seeking relaxation and spa treatments.
Avlaki Beach: A secluded pebble beach, Avlaki is ideal for those who enjoy peace and nature. The rugged landscape and crystal clear waters make it a good place for snorkeling and swimming.
Map of Nissiros (Greece)
There are different spellings for the island’s name in Latin script: Nissiros, Nisiros and Nisyros are often seen in German and English texts. On the map you can clearly see the circular road on Nisyros and the round shape of the island. The neighboring island of Giali, also written Gyali, has only about 20 inhabitants and is not served by the large ferries. With a bit of luck you can find a company offering a boat trip to Giali during the tourist season in summer. Pachia and Pergousa, on the other hand, are completely uninhabited.
