Kimolos

Kimolos is the little brother of Milos in the west of the Cyclades. At their narrowest point, the distance between the two islands is only about one kilometer. The island of Kimolos has an area of just under 40 km² and is round in shape. The number of inhabitants has decreased, but there are still more than 500 people who live on Kimolos all year round. Most live in the village of Psathi by the harbor and in Chora in the mountains, only about 2 steep kilometers from the ferry terminal. Mining is carried out on a large scale on Kimolos. Bentonite in particular is mined in open-cast mines. As a tourist, however, you hardly notice this unless you go hiking in remote areas.

Although there are some good accommodation agencies on Kimolos, the island is mainly visited by day trippers from Milos. A bus is available to take tourists to Chora and the beautiful Aliki beach.

Places on Kimolos

Psathi: The small port town has grown significantly in recent years. A lot of construction has taken place around the entire large bay. However, most tourists take the bus straight on to Chora. The restaurant and cafe “To Kyma”, ten meters from the ferry dock, is ideal for a meal or a coffee while you wait for a ferry. There are few sights in Psathi.

Chora of Kimolos: Definitely the prettier of the two villages on the island. The town is located directly above the harbor, and you can walk up in about 30 minutes. The Chora is typically Cycladic with a castle (Kastro), narrow streets, etc. There are several good rooms to rent and tavernas. If you are looking for peace and quiet, you can definitely stay here for a few days.

Aliki: The most important beach on Kimolos is called Aliki and is located in the south of the island. It is about 1.5 km long. There are 2-3 tavernas and simple rooms to rent. In summer there are even buses here.

Kimolos ferries

The island has surprisingly good ferry connections. Firstly, there are small boats 3-4 times a day from Psathi to Pollonia on Milos. Most day trippers come to Kimolos on this ship. When I last visited in May 2018, there were three departures a day in both directions (early morning, mid-morning and early afternoon). In the summer, however, there will be a fourth, later connection. The crossing costs €4 one way and takes less than half an hour. From Adamas, the main town of Milos, there are buses to Pollonia between June and September that are coordinated with the ferry departure times. A timetable for the ship is displayed at the ferry dock.

Other, large car ferries also stop surprisingly often in Kimolos. On average, there are about two ferries per day. Some just go to Milos, others to Piraeus (Athens), to the island of Sifnos, the island of Serifos, the island of Syros, the island of Paros, the island of Folegandros, the island of Sikinos or to Santorini.

Map of the island and surrounding area

Kimolos is only separated from its larger neighbour Milos by about 1 kilometre of sea.

The other neighbouring island Poliegos (Polyegos) only has 2 inhabitants according to a census a few years ago.

Buses

There is a single bus on Kimolos that connects the port of Psathi with Chora and Aliki beach several times a day in summer. The departure times are coordinated with the ferry times. The nearest airport is on Milos (national flights only).

Snakes Kimolos

Be careful, on some Cycladic islands there is a very poisonous snake, the Cycladic viper. It can be found on Kimolos, Milos and Sifnos, for example. A snake bite is a medical emergency. We have written a special article about snakes in Greece: Click here
