Apollonas (Naxos)

Posted by

Apollonas (sometimes simply called Apollon) is the only tourist resort on Naxos on the north coast. The few hundred inhabitants of Apollonas are mainly visited by holidaymakers looking for peace and quiet. There are about 4-5 hotels and rooms to rent and 8-10 taverns. The atmosphere in the small fishing village is nice and pleasant. Some Germans have also settled permanently in Apollonas in recent years.

In the center of Apollonas, Naxos is a sandy beach about 100 meters long. Directly behind the beach are 5 tavernas and cafes next to each other. A little further out is a less attractive pebble beach. There are now about 50 houses in and around the village. Some of them rent out private rooms.

Taverns and cafes

All the tavernas on the water offer good food at average to slightly inflated prices.

The largest tavern by far is Apollon. The Greek salad tastes excellent and fresh, but at €4.50 it is a bit too expensive. The smaller Venetico is a bit cheaper and also good. The meat dishes in particular are worth trying here. The Delfinaki (Little Dolphin) is set back a bit from the beach and is actually a traditional kafenion. The older owner cooks very well, however, and is happy to let guests into the kitchen. You can look into the pots before you order. The Delfinaki offers traditional, good cuisine at the cheapest prices in town.

Baywatch and Captain Michalis are two cafes on the central beach. Both offer all kinds of coffees as well as ice cream, crepes, cakes and other sweet dishes. Unfortunately, neither is cheap. Baywatch is popular with the local youth.

You won’t find any nightlife or anything like that. However, sometimes after a few glasses of wine and ouzo in the tavernas on the beach in the late evening, there is a cheerful atmosphere.

Kouros of Apollonas

A huge, about 10 meter long stone figure that was unfortunately never completed. It takes about 10 minutes on foot from Apollonas to get to the Kouros (signposted). The Kouros of Apollonas is not finished, unlike the more famous Kouros of Flerio (Central Naxos). The Kouros probably dates from the 7th century BC. The Kouros was probably intended to be placed in a temple. Why it was not completed is still unclear. The route to the Kouros is signposted several times in Apollonas (Naxos).

Buses to Apollonas

Public buses to Apollonas: Depending on the time of year, 1-3 times a day during the week from Naxos town to Apollonas. Almost all buses use the inland route via Chorio, Filoti, Apiranthos, Koronos and Koronida. There are only 2 buses per week along the equally interesting coastal road (Tuesday and Thursday at 2:30 p.m.). A one-way trip from Naxos town doesn’t cost much more than 5 euros.
