After Rhodes, Kos is the most famous island in the Dodecanese in Greece. The island is 290 square kilometers in size and has a population of around 30,000. Kos is known for its long sandy beaches, and since the 1980s the residents’ main source of income has been tourism. Thanks to the international airport, package tourism has developed on a larger scale on the island.

We have selected very good tours / day trips for you that you can book online on a well-known website:

By far the largest city on Kos is the capital of the same name. The large Venetian castle from the late Middle Ages dominates the cityscape. The archaeological museum in Kos Town is also worth seeing. The interior of the island is very mountainous. The highest mountain, Dikeo, is almost 850 meters high. There are many interesting hikes to remote mountain villages whose residents have not yet been overwhelmed by the wave of tourists from the capital and the beaches. If you are looking for a quieter place by the sea, Mastihari, a small fishing village 35 km from the capital, is the right place for you.

Archaeologists on Kos are interested in the ruins of the Asklepieion above the capital. It is an ancient Greek sanatorium. The most famous spa of antiquity was founded by the world-famous doctor Hippocrates around 400 BC. Today, after their studies, doctors around the world swear the oath of Hippocrates, the founder of conventional medicine. The birthplace of Hippocrates is probably the island of Kos.

Where is Kos?

Kos is a Greek island and belongs to the Dodecanese archipelago in the southeastern Aegean Sea. It is located:

West of the Turkish coast: The city of Bodrum (Turkey) is only about 4 kilometers away and easy to see in good weather.
South of the island Kalymnos and north of the island Nissiros.
East of the larger Greek island Rhodes and the island Karpathos.

Accommodation in Kos

In my opinion, the best hotel in Kos Town is the Hotel Koala Kos. Nice single rooms with a balcony and breakfast cost around 40 euros in the low season, double rooms under 60 euros (all rooms include free WiFi). The Koala Hotel is only about 1 kilometer from the city center and 100 meters from the sea. All rooms have a balcony, a TV and a small refrigerator. The 50-room Hotel Koala also has a great pool. Bookable at Booking.com

If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Kos, you should take a look at Elite Apartments. The complex is close to the beach, about 10 minutes walk from the ferry port in Kos Town. The approximately 10 apartments have very good reviews and a shared swimming pool. Our apartment had a balcony, a bedroom, a living room with a sofa, a small kitchen (kitchenette). The Elite Apartments holiday home is open all year round. In winter 2018/2019, holiday apartments for 2 people cost 30 euros.

Our favorite hotel in Kos is the Hotel Koala: More information and booking

A few years ago, I also stayed very cheaply in the noble Kosta Palace right by the harbor. With over 150 rooms, the Kosta Hotel is one of the largest and most famous hotels on the island of Kos.

The cheapest place to stay in summer is the above-average campsite about three kilometers east of the capital. The minibus from Kos Camping is usually at the harbor when a ferry arrives. Transport to the campsite is free.

Our tip: A day trip from Kos to the interesting volcanic island of Nisirros by boat for under 30 euros: Can be booked on the website Getyourguide

Getting to Kos

The island of Kos is home to one of the three international airports in the Dodecanese. The other two major airports are on Rhodes and Karpathos. Charter flights land at the airport every day in summer with tourists, mainly from Germany and England. There are also flights to Kos from Athens and Rhodes. There are direct flights from over 10 airports in Germany in summer. These include small airports such as Baden-Baden, Rostock, Bremen and Münster. Many tourists from Austria can also be found on Kos. You can take a direct plane to Kos from Vienna, Innsbruck and Salzburg. There are also flights from Zurich (Switzerland) to the island in eastern Greece.

Ferries arrive daily from the far-away capital Athens. There are also daily ferry connections to Rhodes, Kalymnos and Patmos. Ferries to Nisyros and Tilos run somewhat less frequently. More expensive hovercrafts (catamarans) connect Kos with the surrounding islands.

To book ferries within Greece, we recommend the reputable website Ferryscanner.com

Smaller passenger ships connect Kos with nearby Turkey (with the well-known tourist town of Bodrum) every day during the season. You pay around 22 euros for a one-way crossing. Return tickets are cheaper than 2 single tickets. You can also take a car with you.

Kos: Map

There are roads and villages in all regions of Kos.

The island is the second most popular tourist island in the Dodecanese after Rhodes.

Buses on Kos

The bus station is about 200 meters from the port. The bus schedule in Kos is good in summer, but not sufficient in winter to explore the island. In summer there are at least 4-5 connections a day to the quiet fishing village of Mastihari, to Kardamena (the big tourist resort on Kos, mostly English) and to the south to Kefalos. Ferries cross from Mastihari to nearby Kalymnos several times a day. This ferry also runs in winter, but not the buses to the ferry port. The crossing takes between 20 and 50 minutes. There are normal ships and fast ferries.

Sailing tours Kos

A very popular excursion is a sailing boat trip to the neighboring islands of Kalymnos and Pserimos, including a visit to the interesting main towns on both islands. For many vacationers, the boat trip is the highlight of their trip to Kos. You should book the tour online in advance (free cancellation is possible up to one day before the trip, the boat tour from Kos lasts about 8 hours). More information and booking

Currently (around summer 2024) the following destinations on the island of Kos can be reached by bus. The number of connections per day and the fare for a single trip are shown in brackets. All departures are from the bus station in Kos town:

There is also an airport bus. This is a little different every day of the week because it is adapted to the flights. The bus usually runs about every 2 hours or seven times a day. The fare to the airport is about 3.50 euros.

All information and prices for the buses refer to autumn 2024.

Larger villages on the island besides the main town are Kardamena, Zia, Tingaki, Kefalos, Antimachia, Mastihari, Marmari, Asfendiou and Pili. The airport is quite a long way from the main town in the interior of the island near Antimachia. Paradise Beach is the destination furthest from the capital by rental car. It takes almost an hour by car.

Trip to Nisyros

Day trips by boat from Kos to the interesting volcanic island of Nisyros are very popular. The trips to the crater of the Niysyros volcano always receive very good reviews. You are picked up in the morning at your hotel in various places on Kos and brought back after the day trip to the volcano. Kos Town

After Rhodes Town and Kalymnos, Kos Town is the third largest town in the Dodecanese (around 15,000 inhabitants). Kos has become rich in recent years through tourism. There are many sights, you should take at least two days to explore Kos.

Sights in Kos Town

The centre is the large Freedom Square (Platia Eleftherias). Around it are the Museum of Kos, the striking Defterdar Mosque (picture) and the market hall (open daily except Sunday).

Market hall and street café in the city center

Hippocrates Tree

The mighty tree not far from the harbor is said to have protected Hippocrates and his students from the strong Greek sun 2500 years ago. The plane tree looks that old – whether it is really over 2500 years old is more than controversial.

Castle of Kos

The mighty castle was completed by the Knights of St. John in the 16th century. It stands right next to the harbor and is the city’s landmark. The castle can be visited (entrance fee 3 euros). From the Hippocrates tree, you walk across the pedestrian bridge across the street to the entrance.

Kos Town Museum

The museum in the center on the central Freedom Square is worth seeing and a “must” for archaeology freaks. The Roman floor mosaics are particularly well-known. Opening hours: Daily except Monday, but only until 2:30 p.m.

Agora

Agora (German: market) is a large excavation site in the center of the city. The large area is freely accessible. However, you should have an idea of what you are looking at – otherwise you won’t recognize much, as there are few signs.

Kos Town Food, Bars, Nightlife

Most package holidaymakers in Kos Town come from England, are young and mainly want to party on vacation. The famous bar mile of Kos (international name Bar Street) is located behind the Hippocrates tree. In this area there is mainly fast food, and McDonald’s is now also present in the city center. The tavern Mummys Cooking is good, popular and inexpensive (especially for younger people). There are a few clubs around Bar Street that are open all night. Prices on Kos are about average. The supermarkets are rather expensive. The Lidl outside the city is by far the cheapest supermarket on Kos.

The holiday resort of Kardamena

This is a large tourist resort in the south of Kos. Almost all holidaymakers come from Great Britain and Ireland. There are some good beaches around Kardamena. English football is shown in the many English pubs, and the restaurants have also adapted their menus to the habits of English guests. In recent years, many holidaymakers from Russia have also come to Kardamena.

Other tourist destinations on Kos include Marmaris and Tigaki.
