Anafi

Anafi has an area of 40 kmē with approximately 300 people living there all year around. Of all the larger Cycladic islands Anafi would be the least touristic one. If you are looking for a place unspoiled by tourism consider a visit to Anafi; or even better: Don't.

Up until a few years ago the only "tourists" on the island were downshifts, dropouts and hippies that enjoyed the peace and quiet at the end of the world. Things have changed a little bit. Because of Anafis reputation as a hideaway for city slickers tired of civilization in general and tourists in particular it became rather popular with the latter. It's rather ironic but this is how it goes.

During high season you will now enjoy the company of other tourists when going there but it still is OK. Unless you really insist on being the only person with socks and sandals Anafi still is a god destination.

The port town of Anafi is called Agios Nikolaos. There isn't much to see. There a few restaurants and rooms to rent. You will also find a travel agency. Most people move on to the local capital Chora.

Chora of Anafi: The local capital of Anafi is probably the least touristic capital of all Greek islands. The small town is quiet beautiful; situated on a hill overlooking the port of Agios Nikolaos. To get you can take a bus that travels along a new road that takes about 4 kilometers or you just walk two kilometers up the old path leading there. It probably depends on how much luggage you are carrying.

The town is all you'll ever need; small super markets, a post office, rooms to rent, a doctor and a few restaurants. Prices are well below average. You get a double room for 20-30 Euros. That's decent. Don't expect luxury or any kind of nightlife though.

Beaches Anafi: East from Agios Nikolaos is Klissidi beach. It's the first from the village. It is the most popular beach and not just with bathers. Camping still is very popular there. During season you might find up to 50 tents there. As a result there are now also a few rooms to rent and restaurants. If you look for a really pretty beach and some solitude keep following the road. It will eventually lead you to Megalos Roukounas and Ormos Kalamos. Both beaches are much more quiet and prettier on top.

Busses on Anafi: There are regular busses between Chora and the port. During season there are also regular busses to the beaches in the east.

Ferries to Anafi: At this stage there are fairly regular ferries to Anafi. They go almost every day. Off season they only connection would between Anafi and Santorin; during season even some boats from Athens stop here.
