Fourni

Fourni is a small island (28 square kilometres) in between Ikaria and Samos. About 1800 people live there. There still is very little tourism on the island but it is hard to tell why. The island is beautiful with fantastic beaches, fjord-like bays and spectacular cliffs. On top it is easy to reach by boat and has a fantastic atmosphere. It is a true insider tip

The main settlement is Kambos. The town I sometimes referred to as Fourni just to keep it simple. Here you would find the port, accommodation and a few restaurants. Fishing is pretty much the only industry here. Fresh fish therefore is the thing to order when in a restaurant. Most popular is Nikos close to the port.

Kambos is a quite village. Being there you think time has stopped and you get an impression how Greece was like 20 years ago. It is a fantastic spot and on top reasonable.

There is another village on the island but hardly anyone ever goes there. To get there follow the about 10 kilometres long dirt road. Its an interesting enough walk. During season you can also book a boat trip.

There are another five tiny islands around Fourni. Only one of them is inhabited – Thymena. Twice a week there is a little boat going there. There is only one lttle guesthouse with a restaurant attached. Better ask if it is open before you go there. It doesn't get much quieter than Thymena. It is possible to camp there.

Getting to Fourni: The Island is part of the route "Athens, Paros, Naxos, Fourni, Samos". Ferries go at least twice a week. There also is a daily boat to and from Icaria.
