Halki is one of the smaller islands in the Dodecanese. It's only about 10 kilometres off the coast of Rhodes. It has an area of 28 kmē about 350 people live here. Halki has little to offer to tourists. The island is barren almost a dessert. Even the beaches are average at the most and there is pretty much nothing to see; what a combination. Back in the old days people made a living by collecting sponges but that's more or less gone. These days tourism seems to slowly kick off. It doesn't change the fact that Halki is a poor island and many people leave.
Emporio: All tourists visiting the island by boat arrive here. There are no other villages on the island. I'm guessing here but I think that might be the reason for the almost total lack of roads. The latter certainly explains why there are very few cars. They simply don't make any sense.
There are a few places that rent out rooms. If you now expect them being rather cheap you are wrong. It may have to do with Greek logic but prices are actually above average. The same applies to the restaurants. They only other explanation would be that most of the visitors are British and even the "above average prices" in Emporio seem dirt cheap to them.
There is little to see in Emporio and since there are no roads there of course are no busses or public transport either. What I'm saying is: so once you are there you are stuck. At least the ferry to Rhodes goes everyday (To Kamiros Skala opposite Halki) and twice a week the ferry from Crete on its way to Rhodes stops in Halki. It also stops on its way back so technically there is a connection to Crete.
