Psara

Psara is a relatively small island (42 square kilometres) but with a heroic history. Once almost 15.000 people lived here. That was before the Greek war of independence started. The island joined the cause and in 1824 was invaded by Emir Pascha and his Egyptian troops. Most of the inhabitants that had not fled the island at that stage got killed or sold into slavery. Psara never recovered from that blow. These days less than 500 people live on the island.

There is very little tourism on the island and it is kind of hard to get there.

The only settlement worth mentioning is Psara town. It is a very quiet spot. There is one guest house and a few rooms to rent. There are no proper roads on the island and no busses. To explore the island best follow the donkey paths. The locals will gladly assist should you plan to go on a hike.

The only way to get there is the boat from Chios that goes two to three times a week.
