Samos is quite a
touristy spot these days. Thanks to direct charter flights
from northern Europe tourist numbers grew considerably. The
island is well known for its nice beaches and good hiking.
While you are there visit the Archaeological Museum.
Quite interesting is the so called Evpalinos-Tunnel. It is a
remarkable piece of engineering. It is 1036 metres long and
was built as a water pipe. To save time workers started
digging at the both sides of the mountain at the same time.
Both ends had to meet in the middle of the mountain and they
did. 2500 years ago that was quite an achievement.
Another famous thing on Samos is the
wine. It is very sweet and incredible strong. 15% is not
unusual for a proper Samos wine. Go easy on that stuff.
The most famous son of the island was Pythagoras the
mathematician. His famous theorem about right-angled
triangles. In case you forgot: a² + b² = c² the square of the
hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares of the legs of
the triangle (cathetus).
Getting to Samos:
During summer there are plenty of direct charter flights to
Samos. Other than that there are daily flights to Athens and
twice a week to Thessaloniki. Since Samos is quite far away
from Athens there are only two ferries a week. They stop in
Mykonos, Paros and Naxos so you can also go from there.
Another ferry goes from Samos to
Chios and during summer
there is a daily connection to Kusadasi on the Turkish
mainland.
