Thasos

Thasos (sometimes spelled Thassos) is the most northerly Greek island in the Aegean. It is situated about 10 kilometres off the Greek coast not far from Kavala. The almost circular island has an area of 380 square kilometres. That’s pretty big considering it has a population of only about 15.000 people. Highest mountain is Mt. Ypsario (1200 m).

Many people earn their living with tourism, farming and fishing, the main industry however is mining. Thasos has some lead and zinc deposits, but it is most famous for its extensive deposits of marble. The layers are up to 500 metres thick.

The easiest way to get to Thasos is by boat from Kavala on the Greek mainland. It’s a 1.5 hour trip. There is a ferry from Keramoti as well.

Thasos does not have an airport (therefore you will find very few package holiday makers). The public transport however is excellent. There is little need for a rental car.

You'll find rooms for rent and hotels for every budget. There are five campsites on Thasos. Most of the tourists that come here are interested in hiking and sun bathing. There are quite a few excellent beaches on Thasos.

Things to see on Thasos: Not much to be honest. There are a few temple ruins in the south, the old town in the capitol Limenas – the port is there as well – a number of churches and monasteries, the village Kastro up in the mountains (a nice hike) and last but not least the famous marble quarries.
